Concord Housing + Redevelopment makes a splash at Concord Family YMCA

Concord Housing + Redevelopment (CH+R) is making waves at the Concord Family YMCA with their $6,000 donation to teach water safety to children. Designated for children from low- income families who are not YMCA members, the donation will enroll them in learn to swim and water safety programs. For the past two years, Concord Housing + Redevelopment has sponsored the Concord Parks & Recreation Department’s Learn to Swim summer program that provides free swimming lessons for children at city pools. Recognizing the importance of teaching children this crucial life skill at an early age, CH+R has provided this donation to bring swim lessons through the winter months to the children of low-income families. “We realize that statistics surrounding youth drowning are alarming,” said Jim Doremus, chief executive officer of the Concord Family YMCA. “National Y statistics reveal that two children die each day as a result of drowning; 88% of children who drowned were under some form of supervision, and 60% of youth drowning incidents occur within 10 feet of safety.” “Drowning is preventable,” continues Doremus. “Concord Housing + Redevelopment has made a significant commitment to help children of low-income families learn a life skill and to be safe around water. By partnering with the Concord Family Y, and their sponsorship of the Concord Parks & Recreation’s summer Learn to Swim program, CH+R shows their concern for the safety of Concord’s children and families. We’re thrilled to partner with them.”
